The sudden, unexpected and traumatic experience of a road death or serious injury is overwhelming and isolating. It can seem like you are on an emotional rollercoaster, and the way you feel may change from minute to minute let alone day to day. Many of our members have told us that they felt like they were ‘going mad’ or that ‘something was wrong with them’ as they struggled to process what had happened. At RoadPeace, we want to reassure you that this is not the case. We offer emotional support, understanding, information and advocacy – you are not alone.
All RoadPeace support services are free of charge and you do not need to be a member to access them.
Our helpline is the first point of contact for all of our support services. Calls to the helpline are free of charge and are treated confidentially.
The helpline is open Monday – Friday from 10am – 4pm.
Please call: 0800 160 1069
Or email: helpline@roadpeace.org
There is a voicemail facility if you are calling outside of these hours.
On the helpline we can listen, talk to you about support available, arrange to send you literature or discuss putting you in touch with other members.
Alternatively, you can complete our self-referral form:

All too often, those grieving can feel like they are no longer allowed to talk about their loved one whose life has been taken. At RoadPeace, we believe remembrance and being able to share memories is vital.
August is National Road Victim Month – we mark this with a Ceremony of Remembrance at the RoadPeace Wood at the National Memorial Arboretum on the second Saturday of August. For more information or to attend please email us (info@roadpeace.org).
The third Sunday of each November marks World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. Regional groups and RoadPeace members organise activities to mark this day across the country.
In the Midlands, the RoadPeace regional group organise a Service of Remembrance which is held at St. Martin in the Bull Ring and includes victim testimonies, music, poetry and the reading out of victims’ names.
For information on the Midlands service please email the coordinator, Lucy (lucy.harrison@roadpeace.org). For information on other services taking place across the country please email us (info@roadpeace.org).
Our regional groups are peer-led, and provide a safe and confidential space for bereaved families and injured victims with similar experiences to come together for mutual support. Some groups also undertake campaigning, fundraising, organise Services of Remembrance and activities such as art and writing. Groups meet via zoom and organise regular opportunities to meet in-person. Bereaved groups are open to any/all family members and friends over the age of 18. Injured groups are open to injured victims and carers who are over the age of 18. There is no time limit on joining a group – we have members who are very newly bereaved and members who are many, many years bereaved. Currently we have the following groups:
East Midlands Bereaved Group
London Bereaved Group
London Injured Group
North West Bereaved Group
South West Bereaved Group
West Midlands Bereaved Group
West Mercia Bereaved Group
For further information or to discuss attending one of the above groups, please contact our helpline. If there is not currently a group in your area, we will refer you to the one nearest.
We currently offer three national online support groups for bereaved parents, bereaved siblings and injured victims. These are open to those over the age of 18.
The bereaved parents’ group is currently facilitated by a trained counsellor, the bereaved siblings’ group and the injured group are peer-led.
For further information or to discuss attending one of the above groups, please contact our helpline.
Our befriender scheme puts callers in touch with others who have been through a similar experience for 1:1 peer support. Befrienders are not counsellors, but are victims themselves who have reached a point where they are able to offer emotional support to others. The befriender and befriendee can decide how often they will be in contact, and can choose to do so by telephone, email or text.
We operate a waiting list for this service.
To discuss having a befriender, or volunteering to become a befriender, please contact our helpline.
This is a trauma support programme for those bereaved through road death. It involves 8 sessions, which are held online and facilitated by trained counsellors. The sessions explore tools to try to understand and cope with grief and an insight into how the mind and body react to traumatic loss.
The programme is open to those over the age of 18 who are at least 6 months into their bereavement. For more information on the programme or to find out when the next one will run, please contact our helpline.
RoadPeace have a legal panel who can assist and advise on matters of civil compensation. The firms we work with are vetted to ensure they provide high quality legal advice. Panel members’ sign up to an agreed set of qualifying criteria as a quality standard and sign of their commitment to road crash victims.
CFG who we have collaborated with on this project is a member of the RoadPeace Legal Panel.
RoadPeace can provide information on the justice system including the procedures involved in collision investigation, inquests and sentencing. We produce a series of local and national guides. For further information on which guides may be useful for you, please contact our helpline.
We realise reaching out for support may feel daunting, but we promise you will find empathy and understanding.
If you have seen the project and would like to visit the cathedral, staff at the cathedral will make you welcome. You will be able to light a candle, quietly reflect or collect some information about RoadPeace.
